Why I voted no on Prop 8

  • Discrimination is wrong, period
  • Same sex marriage has been legal for months and California hasn't been thrown into the sea, no churches have lost their tax-exempt status and no "traditional" marriages have been torn asunder
  • I believe that love and commitment should be valued and respected in all its forms
  • All children should feel that their parents and family are respected and accepted by a community
  • I recognize the difference between a civil marriage (a contract) and a religious marriage; if a church doesn't want to marry a same sex couple, fine but the state shouldn't deny ANYONE their right to a civil marriage
  • Same sex marriages won't have any effect on what is taught in schools- all students are taught to respect marriage but anything beyond that (sex education, etc.) is determined on a local level
  • Keeping same sex marriage legal doesn't open the door for incestuous marriages, marriages to pet/inanimate objects or polygamy- what nonsense! Right this second, marriage is legal between any two adults and that's it
